WME Agent Charles King Leaves to Launch New Content Firm

/ Jan 5, 2015

Charles King, a long-time partner at William Morris Endeavor, is leaving the Hollywood agency to launch a new entertainment venture called Macro, which will focus on creating and distributing content for multicultural audiences.

King had been with WME since 1997, rising through through the ranks over the years to become the first and only black partner in the 100-plus year history of the agency. Tyler Perry has been one of his biggest clients.

“There were two major catalysts that propelled me to move to LA and enter the industry over fifteen years ago: my vision to build a media company one day and the knowledge that what I saw on screen did not fully reflect the spectrum of who we are,” said King in a statement “Launching MACRO fulfills the vision I had all those years ago.”

As a venture, Macro will initially focus on producing film, TV, and digital content for African-American, Latino, and other multicultural audiences. Aiming to create and distribute at a global level, the company said it will work both within and outside of the entertainment industry and bring together creators and other established players in the tech, media, political, and entertainment markets.

The company has a few projects already in development with filmmakers Ryan Coogler (“Fruitvale Station”) and Craig Brewer, and is out sourcing for other ideas.

Based in Los Angeles, Macro said it’s also in the final stages of closing an “eight figure” financing round, and is in talks with several film studios for distribution. The company is also close to hiring several key executives, and has named Ted Sarandos, chief content officer of Netflix, and Raymond McGuire, global head of corporate and investment banking at Citibank, as advisors.

Josh Grode of Irell & Manella is structuring the financing for the company, while Kenneth Deutsch of Latham & Watkins and Sean Monroe of O’Melveny & Myers are serving as co-counsel repping Macro and King.

WME will continue repping King’s current roster of clients.
