Xbox Connects with Channel 4 on Sci-Fi Drama ‘Humans’

Xbox Entertainment Studios has teamed with UK broadcaster Channel 4 on a new hour-long drama series, “Humans,” which will debut on the home-entertainment console and Channel 4 in 2015.

The sci-fi show, based on the Swedish series “Real Humans,” is set in an alternate universe where the latest must-have tech for families is a “Synth” — an advanced robotic servant similar to its live counterpart. In the show, one family looking to turn things around buys a refurbished Synth, only to find that sharing life with a machine has dangerous and chilling consequences. (In other words, no one pays attention to the lessons of movies made by James Cameron.)

Written by Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (“Spooks”), the series will be produced by London-based production company Kudos. Executive producers include Jane Featherstone and Derek Wax for Kudos, as well as Henrik Widman and Lars Lundstrom of Matador Films, which was behind the original Swedish show. Chris Fry is also producing, with Shine International handling distribution.

Xbox has ordered an initial run of eight, hour-long episodes.

“Humans not only questions personal relationships, we loved how this sci-fi show toys with reality and our connection to technology,” said Xbox Entertainment Studios president Nancy Tellem in a statement. “This deal with Channel 4 and Kudos underscores Xbox Entertainment Studios’ commitment to programming premium TV series with global partners and creating engaging interactive experiences.”

“Humans” joins several shows already in development at Xbox Entertainment Studios, including that “Halo”-inspired TV show that Steven Spielberg is executive producing, as well as the “Halo”-inspired web series being executive produced by Ridley Scott. Other, non-”Halo” programs coming to an Xbox near you include the unscripted street-soccer show “Every Street United” and a documentary series from award-winning producers Simon and Jonathan Chinn.

Production on “Humans” will begin later this summer.
