Yahoo UK to Spoof Queen of England in New Animated Series
Yahoo UK is developing an animated web series adapted from a popular Twitter account that spoofs the Queen of England.
“Yes Ma’am” is based on the @Queen_UK Twitter feed, which has more than 1.1 million followers and satirizes both the Royal Family and top politicians in the UK.
Yahoo has ordered six short-form episodes (roughly three minutes long each), and will roll them out on its comedy channel beginning on November 15. Subsequent episodes will premiere on Fridays on Yahoo Screen’s UK comedy channel. Yahoo is also planning a “Christmas special,” to premiere on December 25, tied to the Queen’s annual Christmas speech.
The show will be produced by digital agency Sweetweets and animated by Cutlass Productions. The unnamed creator of the Twitter account is handling writing duties for the series.
In a statement, Dan Watt-Smith, head of video for Yahoo UK, said: “Usually we see characters from TV shows beating a path to Twitter, but we’re trying an alternative approach, creating an online video series for the Queen’s dedicated followers and subjects. Each episode will not only give us a topical angle to promote, but will have long-term appeal, much like her Majesty.”
The voice cast is headlined by Kate Robbins, who previously satirized the Queen in the popular UK puppet show “Spitting Image.” Robbins will also voice the animated version of Kate Middleton. Other cast members include Lewis Macleod and Steve Hope Wynne, each of whom will also voice multiple famous UK political people, including Princes William and Harry and the prime minister David Cameron.
CBS’ attempt to turn a famous Twitter account into a hit sitcom did not go well. Yahoo might see different results, not the least of which because the company will have a built-in audience to market the show to. Not that CBS’ “$h*! My Dad Says” didn’t have that ability either, but that show was very different from the Twitter account that inspired it. That seems less likely to happen to a web series created and written by the person behind the Twitter account.Tags: Animated Series, Comedy Series, Queen of England, twitter, Yahoo UK, Yahoo!, Yahoo!
