Yahoo Saves ‘Community,’ Orders Sixth Season of Cult Favorite

/ Jun 30, 2014

“Community” will get a sixth season, after all, and it will be on Yahoo.

Sony Pictures Television, the producer behind the critically acclaimed but ratings-starved comedy, has announced that the show will return for a 13-episode sixth season on Yahoo Screen this fall.

This is the third half-hour show ordered by Yahoo in 2013. During its Digital Content NewFront presentation in April, the company announced the sports-comedy “Sin City Saints” from “Smallville” producer Mike Tollins and the space-comedy “Other Space” from “Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig.

“Community” continues Yahoo’s focus on TV-sized comedy programming, though with all due respect to Tollins and Feig, it’s certainly the biggest “original” project to be announced by Yahoo or any other DCNF presenter this year. Based on the show’s rather loud following online, this could be the “‘House of Cards’ moment” that Yahoo has been chasing since last fall.

“Community” is an ensemble comedy that follows a group of students at a Colorado community college. Starring Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, Danny Pudi, and Gillian Jacobs, among others, the show was canceled by NBC after five seasons. The cult hit faced the possibility of a resurrection when reports earlier this spring indicated that Hulu was interested in an all-new season. (Hulu currently has syndication rights to all seasons of the show.) But those dreams were thwarted when talks between Sony Pictures and Hulu stalled.

With cast contracts set to expire today, the deal with Yahoo comes in at the very last minute.

The sixth season of “Community” will be executive produced by creator Dan Harmon, alongside Russ Krasnoff, Gary Foster, and Chris McKenna. “I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online,” said Harmon in a statement. “I vow to dominate our new competition.”

Added Jamie Erlicht, president of programming and production at Sony Pictures Television: “You can’t get to six seasons and a movie without a sixth season. Yahoo is the perfect home for the continuation of this journey.”

Ugh, will this show just die already? It was funny for the first two seasons but come on. There have been 97 episodes of this show! How much more could you possibly want?

A sixth season. And a movie. You clearly haven’t been paying attention.
