Yahoo Is Still Chasing Its ‘House of Cards’
As VideoInk first reported last December, Yahoo has been out and about shopping for TV-quality comedy programming — chasing its very own “House of Cards,” as multiple sources indicated to us in the past. The hope is to present several long-form shows to advertisers at the company’s Newfront later this month, in the hopes that such a slate would attract more video ad dollars.
There’s a lot that can be said about that strategy, but Yahoo is intent on seeing it through. The directive has come from CEO Marissa Mayer, and the search is now being overseen by CMO Kathy Savitt. The company is seeking four half-hour comedies, with per-episode budgets in the $700,000 to $1 million range, as reported by The Wall Street Journal earlier this month.
One of those shows might be “34 and Pregnant,” according to Variety. Written by former “Girls” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” scribe Lesley Arfin, the show is a play on MTV’s popular “16 and Pregnant” series. Per the report, Yahoo is considering ordering a 10-episode season for the show, though has not yet made an official commitment on it.
The company has been out to multiple agencies, studios, and producers since last fall on a comedy slate that it could go big with — and has yet to lock anything up. The original plan, we were told, was to have a slate ready by February. So yes, if you’re keeping score, Yahoo is still chasing its “‘House of Cards’ moment.”
Carry on. Nothing to see here — yet.Tags: 34 and pregnant, DCNF, Girls, hbo, house of cards, kathy savitt, marissa mayer, Netflix, newfronts, Yahoo!
