YouTube Founders’ Company Reportedly Lays Off Majority of Staff

/ Feb 5, 2014

MixBit, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen’s follow-up to YouTube, has not had the easiest time since launching last August. According to app analytics site XYO, the app has generated roughly 106,000 downloads across the iPhone and Android devices.

So maybe it’s not too much of a surprise that Avos Systems, the company behind the app, is reportedly laying off a massive chunk of its workforce. According to VentureBeat, Avos has fired close to 80% of its staff, and is shutting down its San Mateo office.

Along with MixBit, Avos Systems owns and operates the bookmarking site Delicious, and until mid-October, also ran the digital magazine service Zeen. The decision to shut down Zeen was made so Hurley and Chen could pay more attention to MixBit, an app that allows users to create, edit, collaborate on, and share videos.

The VentureBeat report puts that decision, as well as the future of the MixBit app, into question.

For their part, Hurley and Chen insist that MixBit is safe. In a statement to press, Avos said: “MixBit is most definitely not shutting down, quite the opposite. We’re really excited about MixBit and have been focusing our efforts around it. You can expect many new features very soon.”

If you’re an optimist, that can be read as Avos whittling down redundancies and removing any staff that they no longer need as they devote all of their attention to MixBit. Avos also denies that the company is shuttering its San Mateo office, claiming that it’s just “moving into a new space.”

That said, neither Avos, nor Hurley or Chen, explicitly denied that 80% of staff wasn’t let go. No matter how you slice it, if that number is accurate, it’s tough to imagine a bright future for MixBit.
