‘Internet Icon’ Still Shines in Season Two Despite Overused Format

/ Jun 18, 2013

We ranked it:

Internet Icon”‘s second season¬†returned in May and is already up to its fourth episode. Judges Ryan Higa, Christine Lakin, Timothy DeLaGhetto and guests as well as hosts (and Internet Icon first season winners) The Brothers Riedell ¬†guide a crew of YouTubers through new challenges as they whittle them down from a cast of 100 to just one remaining Internet Icon.

They’ve obviously adapted the “American Idol” format with three consistent judges and a guest judge, The Brothers Riedell stepping in for Seacrest, elimination rounds, and themed challenges. Instead, though, “Internet Icon” focuses heavily on comedy and knowing the YouTube audience with critiques from some of the people who might arguably know YouTube audiences best. Which is still a hard draw considering that if none of these contestants win a single challenge, they can still keep making YouTube videos — there’s no production time with a major music label, just the chance for a title and some sage advice.

And for all the judges’ talk about brevity being the essence of wit, it’s a really long show — but that’s because clips from each project are paired with that sage advice, the show’s real draw. It’s like watching great chefs reveal all the secret spices as they train their sous chefs. Critiques all come from the heart:t every judge admires the contestants and all seriously want these YouTubers to get better at their craft, whether they’re vloggers or skit writers. Kassem G was even just a guest judge and still found it difficult — during only one episode, eliminating just one creator — to cut someone from the show.

It’s reality TV that’s most likely molding the next TV shows you’ll watch, or at least revealing some of the things most important to filming a YouTube success. So if you can look past the “American Idol” standards, you’re in for some excellent YouTube.
