CollegeHumor’s Honey Boo Boo Parody “Precious Plum!” is Bad Apple
We ranked it:
CollegeHumor’s “Precious Plum! (Honey Boo Boo Parody)” is, as advertised, a parody of TLC’s “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” and follows Mama and Precious Plum to the Little Miss Tiny Tits in Chunky, Mississippi. And that’s where the subtlety ends.
Sort of like the show it’s mimicking, there’s not a whole bunch of plot in the pilot — the source material relies more on the characters to carry it, which the parody attempts to do as well. Similarities really end there, though. Where the show captions are added for hard-to-understand phrases, the whole parody’s captioned and understandable. What would usually be bleeped is both captioned and unedited.
What could have originally could have been part reveling in the optimism of a strong-willed and optimistic girl and part diorama of how the other half lives gets reduced to the very basest schadenfreude, rubbernecking and pointing and laughing. But “Precious Plum!” might not have given themselves a choice: TLC’s “Toddlers & Tiaras” was already fraught with equal responses of enthusiasm and cringe withdrawal (or intense, morbid curiosity) even before Honey Boo Boo emerged a star.
What jokes were they going to make that Honey Boo Boo and Mama didn’t already live? They’re poor. A girl who’s signature dance move includes shaking her gut competes in beauty competitions. They’re uncivilized.
Just like that, “Precious Plum!” transforms Honey Boo Boo and Mama into (kind of well-worn) targets instead of welcoming you to, perhaps, laugh along with them. Crazy though it seems, the best comedy between the two might still be on TLC.Tags: College Humor, Honey Boo Boo, Precious Plum, Reviews
