‘The Edge’: For Dancers by Dancers

/ Nov 5, 2013

We ranked it:

Whether you enjoy DanceOn’s web documentary series “The Edge” is very much determined by whether you enjoy (1) dancing and (2) pop music. If neither of those sound like a good deal to you, turn back now. For those of you who do like dancing and/or pop chart-toppers, “The Edge” will most likely be a series to keep an eye on.

Each episode of “The Edge” follows backup dancers on set with mega stars like Madonna, Will.I.Am, and David Guetta. The documentary series points the camera at the often overlooked role of these dancers and follows them throughout the filming process of music videos. It’s an interesting look at a side of pop music that is often overshadowed by the sheer magnetic personas of the musicians these dancers perform behind.

“The Edge” markets itself as a documentary series although “behind-the-scenes” probably would have been more fitting. Like most BTS videos, “The Edge” only approaches these dancers on face value. When David Guetta asks you to dance in his video, you are going to do nothing but swoon over how great he is, which in large part is what goes on during each episode. Zero percent of these dancers are going to discuss (on camera) their aching back or sore feet. This is a dream come true for all of these performers; so why would they complain?

This means that “The Edge” is largely devoid of any conflict. Again, to package it up as a documentary, the series would need to present a deeper level of storytelling than it currently does. As of now, each episode is around 80% dancing and 20% talking about how talented and amazing pop superstar X is. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it does make watching the series tough if you don’t particularly love dancing or the music of Will.I.Am. Then again, why would anyone watch a channel called DanceOn if they didn’t like dancing?

So, if you love dancing, watch “The Edge.” And if you love pop club bangers, watch “The Edge.” For everyone else, the web is a big place, I’m sure there’s something else out there for you.
