Netflix’s ‘Virunga’ Nominated for BAFTA
“Virunga,” a documentary acquired by Netflix (NFLX) last year has been nominated for a BAFTA film award.
From Grain Media, the film follows a group of park rangers who are trying to protect endangered mountain gorillas from poachers, militiamen, and other dangerous forces in Africa’s oldest national park. Directed by Orlando von Einsiedel and executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, it debuted on Netflix last year.
At the BAFTA film awards, the film will compete against “20 Feet from Stardom,” “20,000 Days on Earth,” “CitizenFour,” and “Finding Vivian Maier,” in the documentary category.
Stateside, “Virunga” is also on the Academy’s short list for this year’s Oscars. Another digital documentary, “The Internet’s Own Boy,” which premiered on Vimeo, is also under consideration.Tags: Awards, BAFTA, Documentary Film, Grain Media, Netflix, netflix originals, Virunga
