YouTube Network FullScreen Hires HBO Go Co-Creator Tim Mohn
Fullscreen, one of the top multi-channel networks on YouTube, just announced the hiring of Tim Mohn as the company’s new senior vice president of engineering. Mohn has an impressive track record within the technology space: he was the co-creator of the ever-popular HBO Go app and before that served as the vice president of technology at NBCUniversal and Comcast. The announcement was made via a blog post from Fullscreen CEO George Strompolos, who said Mohn was hired to push Fullscreen’s “technological innovation to the next level.”

Shazam’s New iPad App Automatically Tags Every Song Ever Listen To
Shazam released a major update to its iOS app Thursday that turns your iPad into an automated log file for every song you listen to, every TV show you watch and every commercial you’re trying to ignore. This is possibly due to a new feature dubbed auto tagging: Once turned on, Shazam will automatically listen to everything within reach of the iPad’s microphone, generate an acoustic fingerprint every few seconds and ping Shazam’s servers to look for matches. Identified songs, TV shows and ads are automatically sent to a personal queue within the Shazam app.

Tribune Co Launches Digital Ventures Unit
Media company Tribune Co. has appointed Internet and digital media veteran Shashi Seth as president of Tribune Digital Ventures, a newly formed unit that will develop digital products and businesses.
Seth, who has worked at such companies as Yahoo, AOL, Google and the latter’s online video arm YouTube, will report to Tribune CEO Peter Liguori. Tribune, which owns the LA Times, Chicago Tribune and various TV stations, said the new arm will look to “leverage Tribune’s strength in local content and data and extend the reach of its distribution platform.”

How Aereo’s Attorneys Beat Hollywood (For Now)
When Barry Diller unveiled Aereo in February 2012, he said the startup allowing consumers to watch network television on digital devices would break the chains of a “closed cable-broadcast-satellite circle.” Not surprisingly, all of the major TV networks immediately sued. So Aereo turned to R. David Hosp and Michael Elkin to defend the company in court. Hosp was picked because five years earlier, he persuaded an appeals court to overturn an injunction issued by Judge Denny Chin that had stopped Cablevision’s remote-storage DVR. Diller and Aereo’s leaders knew that the Cablevision ruling raised issues similar to those represented by Aereo and thus would be their best hope of beating the broadcasters. But Aereo’s success was less than assured. Even though the company prevailed at an initial stage by getting a judge to deny the broadcasters’ injunction request, when the case was appealed to the Second Circuit Court of appeals in New York, Aereo’s lawyers received unwelcome news.

While consumers continue to perceive TV programming as superior in quality to that of online fare, their viewing habits are becoming harder to differentiate between channels. That’s according to a new study from Starcom USA, which included 4,800 respondents. Remarkably, Starcom found no statistical relationship between quality or likability scores and whether consumers believed content was from the Web or TV.
‘Arrested Development’ Creator on the Future of TV and Bringing Back the Bluths
When Arrested Development returns this Sunday, resurrected after a six-year hiatus, the format of the show will look very different than it did in 2006. Yes, all your favorite Bluths will be back, and creator Mitch Hurwitz will still be at the helm, but rather than a network premiere, all 15 episodes of the fourth season will drop at the same time on the streaming service Netflix, allowing fans to consume as much or as little of the season as they want, when they want. The episodes all take place concurrently, with each one catching up on the life on a particular character since the Season 3 finale. Wired talked with Hurwitz about how bringing the Bluths to Netflix allowed him to do things that never would have been possible on network TV, and why he believes the format could change the way that shows get made.

TV, Video Habits See Big Changes
With rising OTT viewing, many cut cable As online video gains viewers, cable TV’s losses mount. While 60% of US internet users surveyed told AYTM Market Research that they still had a cable TV subscription in May 2013, another 23% said they had a subscription in the past, but not any longer. Online video and streaming is also bumping up the connected TV and OTT market. The Leichtman study found that in 2013, 44% of US households had at least one TV set connected to the internet, up from 38% in 2012. And as more TVs are connected digitally, OTT viewing is rising quickly. This year, one-third of US adults surveyed reported watching OTT content daily (nearly double what it was 2 years ago) and 59% said they did so weekly.
