New Media Rockstars, the online magazine covering digital video and social media culture, has shut its doors. Per a post published by NMR’s editor-in-chief Alan Van, the site is “ceasing operations” due to a lack of funding from its investor, Ryan Devitis. According to people familiar with the situation, Devitis notified NMR staff last Friday of his decision to cut funding, which he said would be “effective immediately.”
It’s a swift change for NMR, which about a month ago was close to being acquired by Blayze, an online video curation site founded by former YouTube executive Ben Smith. At the time, we were told that the acquisition was a done deal, and that Blayze planned to turn NMR into an outlet covering all things YouTube culture. That deal fell through for unknown reasons. We are told that played a “significant” role in Devitis’ decision to shutter NMR.
