VEVO is now available on Samsung Smart TVs. The app offers access to the music video service’s library of 75,000+ music videos, original shows, and concert performances. This adds to VEVO’s mobile presence, which already encompasses the major smartphone and tablet operating systems and connected TV devices like the Apple TV, Roku, and Xbox.
What makes the app launch on Samsung Smart TVs interesting, though, is what it says about VEVO’s TV ambitions. This year, VEVO has rolled out a new always-on broadcast-style linear channel called VEVO TV, which is available online and across all of the devices the service supports.
That will not change with the new app on Samsung Smart TVs. What will be different, however, is how VEVO TV is presented in the app. According to VEVO, as soon as users access the app on Samsung Smart TVs, they will immediately see programming from VEVO TV. “Having VEVO TV front and center allows you to sit back and enjoy without having to worry about what to watch,” said the company in a blog post. This passive viewing experience extends to genre channels available on the app.
It makes sense; if viewers are going to interact with an app on a TV, they should have easy access to the type of viewing experience that they’re used to. For VEVO, it’s just another way to expand an ad-supported TV offering, which it hopes unlocks more TV ad dollars.
