‘Sailor Moon Crystal’ to Debut on Hulu in July
Back in May, Viz Media acquired the rights to the “Sailor Moon” anime franchise, and began streaming English-subtitled episodes digitally for the first time on Neon Alley and Hulu.
Now Viz is partnering with Hulu to distribute a new series, “Sailor Moon Crystal,” which will premiere on both Hulu and Hulu Plus on July 5, according to Variety.
The show will also premiere in Japan on that date, with the North American Hulu version including English subtitles. “Sailor Moon Crystal” will recap the story viewers already know of Sailor Moon, that of a teenage girl who transforms into a “guardian of justice” with superhuman powers to stop the bad guys. Viewers who subscribe to Hulu Plus can also see all shows from the franchise on Xbox One, Xbox 360, Sony’s Playstation 3 and PS 4 systems, as well as Roku.
Munehisa Sakai directed the 26-episode series for Toei Animation, the studio behind the original “Sailor Moon” anime. The show is based on a popular manga series by Naoko Takeuchi.
Viz Media is based in San Francisco. It is owned by three Japanese manga and animation companies, Shueisha, Inc., Shogakukan, Inc., and Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions.
