A new comedy from Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh will be the last to join Amazon Studios’ third season of original programming pilots.
“Red Oaks,” a half-hour coming-of-age comedy set in 1985, follows a college student who gets a summer job as an assistant tennis pro at the Red Oaks Country Club in suburban New Jersey. While there, he comes across a color cast of misfit co-workers and club patrons, while internally, he’s still struggling to decide which major to declare in the fall.
Set to debut with other Amazon Studios original pilots later this fall, “Red Oaks” will star Craig Roberts (“Submarine”), Paul Reiser (“Mad About You”), Richard Kind (“Luck”), Jennifer Grey (“Dirty Dancing”), and Oliver Cooper (“Californication”).
The pilot was written by Gregory Jacobs (“The Knick”) and Joe Cangemi (“Eliza Graves”), and will be directed by acclaimed comedy helmer David Gordon Green (“Eastbound & Down”). Executive producers include Soderbergh, Green, Jacobs, and Gangemi.
“Greg Jacobs told me this idea on the set of ‘Behind the Candelabra’ [Note: which Soderbergh directed and won an Emmy for] and I told him it was great and that he should start working on it immediately,” said Soderbergh in a statement. “Then, while we were on the set of ‘The Knick’ he gave me the script he wrote with Joe Gangemi and I said, ‘This is ready to go, let’s find a director.’ We very quickly agreed to approach David because the humor was sharp without being mean, and we felt he would understand and appreciate that.”
This completes Amazon Studios’ third round of original pilots. “Red Oaks” joins a slate that includes “The Cosmopolitans,” “Hand of God,” “Hysteria,” and “Really.” As is custom with Amazon Studios, the division says it will decide which of the shows get full-season orders based on customer reviews and other factors.
