Amazon’s trying its hand at the binge-watching model used so successfully by Netflix with series like “Orange Is the New Black” and “Arrested Development.” Upcoming Amazon show, “Transparent,” will even star a prominent actor form the latter series, Jeffrey Tambor.
Playing a Los Angeles father transitioning to become a woman in his old age, Tambor will feature in “Transparent” alongside Judith Light, Gaby Hoffman, Jay Duplass, and Amy Landecker. The series will premiere on Amazon in September, having been picked up by the video streaming service this past March.
Since all of 10 of the series’ episodes will come out on Amazon simultaneously, the platform could see viewership patterns that mimic those of series that debut in full on Netflix. “Transparent” creator, Jill Soloway, explained how the show is geared towards a binge-watching release schedule.
“I kind of think of it like a five-hour movie, more than 10 episodes” she said in a statement. “From the beginning, we’ve seen it as five hours.”
Soloway is behind major series like “Six Feet Under,” “United States of Tara,” and Grey’s Anatomy.”
