Former MTV Networks CEO Judy McGrath is set to join the board of directors at Amazon as the company increases its commitment in the digital video space.
Amazon disclosed McGrath’s election to the board in a recent SEC filing. The company also named her to the board’s Leadership Development and Compensation Committee, with both appointments effective of October 1.
McGrath ran Viacom’s MTV Networks from July 204 to May 2011, and was part of the team that launched the music network in the early 80s. Recently, she has been serving as president of Astronauts Wanted: No Experience Necessary, a digital content studio formed via a joint venture between McGrath and Sony Music Entertainment. (Astronauts Wanted is behind the new season of Chernin Group’s “@SummerBreak,” as well as the Grace Helbig- and Mamrie Hart-starring “#HeyUSA.”)
McGrath’s appointment to Amazon comes at a time when the e-commerce giant is promising an even bigger commitment to its video business. Last week, the company said it plans to spend more than $100 million on original programming during the third quarter of 2014.
