Defy Media and New Regency started a short film competition a while back called Prototype, focusing on filmmakers with an action, sci-fi, or special effects bent. Today, the companies announced the winners, director Steven Ilous and writer Daniel Perea with their sci-fi thriller “Polis.”
The competition allowed eight finalists, all emerging filmmakers, to use Defy’s digital platforms to showcase their short films. The filmmakers were awarded $20,000 each to create their films, which Defy promoted across its platforms Screen Junkies, Break, and The Escapist. The winners, creators of “Polis,” will now get to work with New Regency (whose portfolio includes films like “12 Years a Slave” and “Birdman”) to develop a feature film.
“Polis” takes place in a futuristic, utopian society with, of course, some dark secrets. The film’s director, Ilous, has worked on digital effects before in films like “The Polar Express” and “Matrix” sequels.
Greg Siegel will produce the feature film version of “Polis.” He already executive produced the short version along with all the other short films in the Prototype competition for Defy. Before that feature film comes out, though, you can watch the short film here.
