Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to “The Other One: The Long, Strange Trip of Bob Weir,” a new documentary film about the influential Grateful Dead singer and guitarist, and will release it on May 22.
Directed and produced by Mike Fleiss (“God Bless Ozzy Osbourne,” “The Other One” chronicles Weir’s journey from a kid growing up in Palo Alto to the global success he achieved as a member of The Grateful Dead. The film mixes interviews with bandmates, colleagues, fans, family members, and Weir himself with musical performances and other archival footage.
Starting on May 22, the film will be available across all Netflix territories, just in time for the Dead’s final shows at Soldier Field in Chicago.
It’s the latest documentary project to be taken by Netflix as the company aggressively builds out its original feature film slate. Notably, Netflix has a multi-picture deal with actor Leonardo DiCaprio to produce documentaries on important social causes and projects.
“The Other One” was produced by Marc Weingarten (“God Bless Ozzy Osbourne”), and executive produced by Martin Hilton (“The Bachelor”) and Justin Kreutzmann (“In the Attic with Pete Townshend & Friends”).
The film premiered at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival and won the 2014 Audience Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival.
