Created and directed by YouTubers Stephen Dypiangco and Patrick Epino, whose National Film Society channel covers movies, pop culture, and the art and business of filmmaking, “Awesome Asian Bad Guys” is an homage to the nameless but imposing villains of classic ’80s and ’90s action films. It stars both traditional and YouTube talent, including Randall Park (“Fresh Off the Boat”), Al Leong (“Die Hard”), Yuji Okumoto (“The Karate Kid”), the Wong Fu Productions crew, Wendy Nguyen, AJ Rafael, and Dypiangco and Epino themselves.
“Awesome Asian Bad Guys” started as a two-minute short video on the National Film Society channel and was later developed into a feature-length project financed primarily by a $54,000 Kickstarter campaign. It’s produced by Dypiangco, Patrick Epino, Milton Liu, and Diana Williams, and is executive produced by Phil Yu and Devon George.
FilmBuff will release the film across digital platforms on June 23. This includes the film’s own website, which is powered by direct-to-consumer distribution service VHX, as well as EST platforms such as iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Instant Video, Vudu, and Xbox Video.
