Al Roker Entertainment, the production group founded by weather forecaster and television personality Al Roker, today announced the launch of Al Roker Labs. It will focus on analyzing live streaming data and tracking talent on the mobile live stream platform Periscope, with the goal of generating data useful to both emerging talent and advertisers.
Founded in 1994, Al Roker Entertainment has produced scripted and unscripted content for The Weather Channel, Food Network, Discovery, Lifetime and HGTV. Roker, who has been the weather forecasted on NBC’s “Today” since 1996, is an early adoper of the Periscope platform, having amassed over 17,000 followers on the Twitter-owned app. Al Roker Labs will endeavor to accurately place talent within a matrix of new content verticals. Analysts have already begun identify leaders in categories such as travel, food, music, talking heads and celebrity.
To perform the analysis, Al Roker Labs has paired with digital analytics firm Dextro, which provides custom APIs for developers looking for easy access to actionable statistics. Analysts have already begun making connections that will help creators and brands to better navigate the live streaming space.
Al Roker Labs has already made one interesting discovery — there appears to a lack of correlation between a large Twitter following and a large following on Periscope, despite the fact that the micro-blogging app is integrated with, and pushes users to, the live streaming platform. Early leaders on Periscope include comedians Tom Green (25,400 followers) and Kevin Hart (151, 400 followers), YouTube star Matthew Santoro (109,400 followers) and presidential hopeful Hilary Clinton (96,500 followers), the latter of whom has been frequently streaming updates from the campaign trail.
