Digital-first film studio Supergravity Pictures announced today that its next project is a stand-up comedy special featuring YouTube comic Elliott Morgan. The studio will finance, produce and distribute the project, which is scheduled to be released later this year.
The studio declined reveal its distribution strategy for the special, but in the past it has a shown a preference for Vimeo On Demand, which recently released two of its films, Kevin Wu and Justin Chon’s comedy “Man Up” and the thriller “The Chosen,” starring Kian Lawley.
Morgan is best known for his time as a host on Phillip DeFranco and Discovery Communications’ news and entertainment channel SourceFed. He has also created video content for tech and social media outlet Mashable. Currently, he serves as a video host for Mental Floss, online game show network Buzzr and SpikeTV’s “Lip Sync Battle.” Morgan is also active in stand-up comedy, a segment of his career that has lived mostly off of the internet until now.
Supergravity has stand-up experience, as well. Marc Hustvedt, who co-founded Supergravity with Max Benator in 2014, has executive produced half a dozen comedy specials, including “Ari Shaffir: Passive Aggressive,” “Dancing Around the Shit Fire with Kyle Kinane” and “Maria Bamford: The Special Special Special!,” the latter of which was named by New York Magazine as one of the 10 best comedy specials of 2012.
Last month, the studio announced that it had secured an undisclosed amount of funding from AT&T/Chernin Group co-venture Otter Media to expand its social media star-driven filmmaking efforts. It’s currently working with Ray William Johnson on a documentary film examining issues of net neutrality.
