Online ticket seller Fandango, a division of NBCUniversal, announced today that it has acquired M-GO, a leading digital distributor of new releases and catalog titles from major studios and television producers.
A joint venture between Technicolor and DreamWorks Animation, M-GO is available through variety of connected, over-the-top and mobile devices including Android, iOS, Samsung, LG and Roku.
According to Fandango, it experienced 81% growth in ticketing dollars year-over-year in 2015 and added more than 1,600 new screens, bringing its total U.S. screen count to more than 27,000.
FandangoLabs — a research and development group focused on enhancing the moviegoing experience launched by Fandango in 2015 — will utilize the capabilities of the M-GO platform in the creation of new moviegoing products and services.
“With the addition of M-GO, we’ll be able to accelerate the ticketing momentum achieved in a record-breaking 2015 by creating compelling new digital products that serve consumers throughout the movie lifecycle,” said Fandango president Paul Yanover in a statement. “We’re excited to start working with our studio and exhibition partners to bundle theatrical tickets and home entertainment products in the form of ‘super tickets,’” combining theatrical ticketing and home entertainment bundles, “gifts with purchase, and other promotional offers.”
In addition to selling tickets, Fandango produces a slate of original online video series covering different aspects of the moviegoing experience via its Movieclips arm, including “I Love Movies,” “Movie3Some,” “Weekend Ticket,” “FrontRunners,” “Mom’s Movie Minute” and “Reel Kids.”
Earlier this month, Movieclips debuted a special “red carpet edition” of “I Love Movies,” produced in parthership with media brand InStyle, in which fashion share the impact of their favorite movies — including “Rosemary’s Baby,” “Clueless,” “Auntie Mame” and “Love Story” and others — on their lives, work and red carpet trends. Participants include designer Isaac Mizrahi, celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger, costume designer Paolo Nieddu (“Empire”), style icon Olivia Palermo and InStyle and StyleWatch editorial director Ariel Foxman.
