“Debate Wars” With Michael Ian Black Gets Greenlight from Seeso
Seeso, the digital comedy channel from NBC Universal, today announced it has greenlit another project to its slate — “Debate Wars” with Michael Ian Black (“Wet Hot American Summer”) attached. “Debate Wars” will stage comedy debates between two teams of comedians and improv talent to duke out contrary topics. Other talent attached include Janeane Garofalo, Judah Friedlander, Gilbert Gottfried, Eugene Mirman, Aparna Nancherla, Todd Barry, Jo Firestone, Connor Ratliff, Guy Branum, Phoebe Robinson and Dave Hill.
Seeso will begin taping the six-episode series in mid-May in New York City and will ticket the tapings similar to The Daily Show or other live-to-tape formats. Expected release for the project is later this year.
“I look forward to moderating spirited debates on all manner of inconsequential subjects that are, nonetheless, of grave national importance. Hopefully our debaters will conduct themselves with exactly the same level of maturity as our presidential candidates,” said Michael Ian Black, who will also grab and Executive Producer title on the show.
Longtime “Conan O’Brien” vets Brian McCann and Liz Plonka, will serve as Showrunner and Director, respectively. Big Beach TV is set to produce.
“Debate wars combines three things America just can’t seem to get enough of: debates, wars and Michael Ian Black. Enough said,” said Evan Shapiro, Executive Vice President, Digital Enterprises, NBCUniversal.
