The first 3D films in the early 1950s usually contained a shot or two designed to showcase the technology and justify the torture of wearing unformfortable cardboard glasses for 90 minutes, such as the incongruous man hitting a paddle ball towards the camera in 1953’s “House of Wax.”
In the new virtual reality (VR) short “A Perfect Day in Los Angeles,” released today, the tech showcase shot is a VFX composite of donuts from Stan’s Donuts in Westwood floating down around the expanse of the 360-degree image.
But the real stars of the video — produced by multi-platform network Tastemade and VR production company Jaunt Studios (a division of Jaunt Inc.) — are real world locations in the City of Angels, ranging from a hidden swim hole in Malibu and the LA Galaxy’s practice field to the “Jaws” ride at Universal Studios and the set of the TBS talk show “Conan.”
While Tastemade’s name references its ample foodie content, “VR really lends itself to our travel programming,” Larry Fitzgibbon, co-founder of Tastemade, told VideoInk. “What’s exciting about VR is it not only enables you to bring people there, but also immerses them in this place.”
Filmed with the Jaunt ONE camera, “A Perfect Day in Los Angeles” was made conjunction with LA24.org, the committee bidding to host the 2024 Olympic Games.
“They were helpful in securing some of the talent and some of the places we went,” said Fitzgibbon of LA24.
“A Perfect Day in Los Angeles” also features appearances by Ryan Seacrest, Conan O’Brien, “Video Game High School” star Jimmy Wong, and “tastemakers” Jax Tranchida, Carlo Alberto Orecchia, Julie Nolke, Katie Quinn, as well as aerial shots of iconic L.A. landmarks such as the Griffith Park Observatory and the Venice canals. It is available within the Jaunt VR App for iOS, Android, Gear VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Desktop 360, as well as at jauntvr.com.
While there are none of Tastemade’s signature sensual food prep shots in “A Perfect Day in Los Angeles,” Fitzgibbon said it is looking to experiment with VR in cooking and other formats.
“We think this is a great new tool for us as storytellers, and we plan to tell all the same and great types of stories that Tastemade tells every day,” said Fitzgibbon.
