In an effort to reach a younger audience, ESPN is bringing “SportsCenter” to Snapchat. The new series will be hosted by various TV personalities, including Katie Nolan, the Emmy-winning sports personality who joined ESPN last month from Fox Sports; “SportsCenter” anchor Elle Duncan; ESPN NBA commentator Cassidy Hubbarth; ESPN Radio host Jason Fitz; and comedian Cy Amundson.
Under the two-year agreement — which is exclusive to Snapchat — ESPN will produce two-daily, three-to-five minute shows for the social media website, which has struggled to maintain user growth since the launch of copycat competitor, Instagram Stories. As Snapchat aims to increase its following using the 38-year-old franchise to lure consumers to its platform, ESPN is hoping to capitalize on the younger audiences that dominate the social media platform. If ESPN hopes to stay afloat it will need to continue making moves to appeal to a digital audience. The network’s viewership has been on a steady decline for the last six years, as TV-viewing habits have shifted more toward online streaming, according to research firm Nielsen.
