Brooklyn-based podcast network Gimlet Media has hired on former Hulu exec Jenny Wall as its first chief marketing officer.
In the new role, Wall (pictured) will manage all marketing and audience development for Gimlet. The three year old company, which has recently cut deals with the likes of Amazon and ABC to adapt its content for the TV Screen, has formerly relied heavily on word of mouth to grow its business. Now, Wall will invest her time in trying to make the brand a house hold name.
In the past, Wall has worked with HBO, Netflix and, most recently, Hulu. During her time at Hulu, the industry veteran served as senior VP and head of marketing, where she oversaw marketing and promotion for the company and its shows.
“Jenny brings over two decades of entertainment marketing experience, with a proven track record for sparking cultural moments through stories that matter, from “House of Cards” to “The Handmaid’s Tale,” said Gimlet co-founder and president Matt Lieber. “She has worked to elevate the most significant new platforms in entertainment — HBO, Netflix, Hulu — and I can’t wait to see how her innovative, risk-taking approach will advance our growth in this new world of audio. I couldn’t be more thrilled to have Jenny onboard as Gimlet enters a pivotal, exciting phase for the company and audio industry at large.”
With Gimlet moving deeper into the TV and Film space, one of Wall’s key focuses will be to develop marketing strategies for the film and television projects that Gimlet is adapting from its audio programming. Later this year, ABC will debut “Alex Inc.” starring Zach Braff based on Gimlet’s popular podcast “StartUp.” Additionally, Sam Esmail (“Mr.Robot”) is currently working on an adaptation of another podcast, “Homecoming,” for Amazon.
VideoInk recently sat down with Gimlet Media’s head of TV and film, Chris Giliberti, to discuss the process of adapting the podcast format for video. Watch the interview below.
